How to Start in Affiliate Marketing

By on August 27, 2020

” How to start in Affiliate Marketing?” This is a question that is asked all the time. And one that I even asked myself not too long ago. I realized that I know so much more now than I knew then so decided to write this introduction. Hopefully it could help someone just thinking about starting an online business.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Here is the definition of Affiliate Marketing: a marketing arrangement by which an online retailer pays commission to an external website for traffic or sales generated from its referrals. Basically what that means is that we promote other people’s goods or services. And we get paid a commission whenever a customer purchases something based on our efforts.

For example: there is a guy that makes chocolates to sell. I promote his chocolates on my website and send them to his site where he sells them. Once the customer buys some product, I will make a percentage commission on the sale. This is a very simplified explanation but it’s basically what affiliate marketers do.

Affiliate Marketing System

There are 4 parts to making yourself an affiliate marketing system. 1) Choose an interest. This should be something that you know about or enjoy. It’s always better to sell products that you know about or are passionate about. Like in the example above, say I really like chocolates. Because of that I’ve learned a lot about them over time and can probably talk for hours about them. How fun and interesting would that be to do for a living? As the saying goes, “if you work at what you like, you wouldn’t work another day in your life”.

2) Build a website. This is how you will get yourself and your products out there. And how people would get to know you. The internet is a very powerful tool and can get you so much more exposure than old school advertising methods. This may seem daunting if you don’t consider yourself a “techie” or are comfortable with computers. It was for me, but it actually wasn’t as difficult as I thought. Especially with the right training (more on that later).

3) Get visitors and ranking for your website. Simply put, to get people and potential customers to your website, you have to attract them with what you post on it. Your content. This should be interesting, informative and helpful to your visitors so that they will spread the word and want to come back. There are many techniques for doing this which I won’t get into now.

4) Earn revenue. Finally, the part you’ve been waiting for! Once you’ve gotten people to know, like and trust you through your website. They will be now inclined to buy from you depending on your recommendations. Going back to the chocolate example once again. By now visitors to my website would know, like and trust my expertise and recommendations when it comes to chocolate. Now they would be ready to follow up and make purchases from my recommended sellers.

How to Start in Affiliate Marketing?

I hope that I’ve adequately described the basic ideas of affiliate marketing above? Is it something that you might be interested in doing to make some supplemental income? Many people have started for this reason and many have also gone full time into it. I was interested and started on my own. There is so much information available on the internet that covers anything you could be interested in. I started out trying to learn on my own. But the problem was too much information! Soon I was lost and confused and frustrated. Didn’t help that I wasn’t very computer-literate.

So, I decided to look at some courses and even tried a couple. Learned some stuff but found out too late (after I bought the course) that the training didn’t work for me. Here now is a short review of a course that worked for me and why. The company is called Wealthy Affiliate and here are some of my experiences.

I stumbled across them by accident while I was researching affiliates. From my research I found that they have been around since 2005 since they were founded by Kyle and Carson. This was a huge plus for me as I was unaware that affiliate marketing had been in existence for so long (the other companies that I dealt with before had only been around for 5 and 7 years). Also, both Kyle and Carson are still active on the platform on a daily basis!

I was still skeptical but then this brings me to my second point. They offer a free sign up course to try. This was really important to me who had been caught before. The free course was to build your own website to get started. If you are a technical person this might not seem like much for you. But for me it was a real test to see if they could really teach this “techno peasant” to set up a website as easily as they advertised.

I could not believe but it actually worked! Furthermore, the teaching style of Kyle worked for me. I was actually understanding and implementing what he taught! I was hooked, the amount of value they provided made me believe I could do this. But they weren’t done yet. You could sign up for the full course and only pay $19 for the first month. I’m not going to go into all the pricing details as you can see for yourself through their link. Also, to note, there was no up sell pressure like on other sites. These guys have a good product and they know it no need to oversell and spam people.

The next big thing for me, and probably the most important, is the community and support. Over their 15 years in existence they’ve trained about 2 million entrepreneurs many of whom are very successful. And at any point there are about 200,000 active users of their platform. Over time, they have built a very strong community and help is forthcoming all the time. There is an onsite technical team for any questions or problems. But there is also a live chat going on constantly. Here no question is too stupid or ignored. Someone always answers you. Sometimes even the owners are on here with answers! The community is very knowledgeable and helpful and I’ve personally not experienced this level of assistance anywhere else.

Conclusion

In conclusion I would definitely recommend this course for anyone interested in starting an affiliate marketing business. This is not a fly-by-night course that promises overnight riches and success. It requires hard work and time to get yourself branded and recognized online. However, it does teach the fundamental concepts and has a great community to help you on your day to day journey. I have been a member for just over 1 month. Already I have 4 websites that I am writing content for while continuing on with the course and learning more skills. It’s all happening in real time! Please check out this Wealthy Affiliate link if interested. Thanks.
